Here’s to a happy and healthy New Year.
Did you make any resolutions? Have you broken them yet? Why is it that we apparently fail so easily?
Generally we set ourselves up to fail by setting the bar too high or just not planning how to succeed, for example:
Let’s say you want to drink more water. Making a sudden leap to drinking 16 glasses a day territory will taste really bland and make your belly feel like a water bath at bursting point.
So is cold turkey really the way to go? Generally it is not a great recipe for success!
The trick with resolutions is to be realistic and to creep up on them one step at a time. After all how can you expect yourself to be Saintly when you are not even back to your normal eating and drinking regime just yet.
A better approach might be to weed out a few glasses of wine and cups of tea or coffee and then replace them with herbal tea and water, perhaps flavoured with juice for now. Next you might even manage to drop a few more toxic beverages, try a home-made juice or smoothie and perhaps even some water flavoured with lemon, mint or cucumber, if you just can’t stand pure H2O.
By being kind to yourself you can ease your taste buds away from sugar and caffeine and edge towards the joys of proper hydration in just a few days or weeks. But none of us are robots, it’s ok to stray from the path now and then. Being ‘good’ 80 plus percent of the time is better for your health, your energy levels and also your appearance.
Just not sure how much to drink?
Does anyone really know the answer? Well there is a lot of differing opinion on this front. The classic response is 2 litres or 4 pints of water for adults but some say that the larger you are the more you need so for many of us it is probably more like 3 or more. My top tip is to drink gradually through the day though, otherwise you will urgently and repeatedly need to, as my Nan used to say, pay a call during the night.
